KUMIHIMO I°

Salve (that's italian for Hi there)
After my debut with plastic canvas, I am now passing on to kumihimo.
I ordered from Amazon the book Kumihimo: Japanese Silk Braiding Techniques, it was fascinating but after having seen the Marudai used for making the braids I wondered, "Where do I find it ?". Needless to say, the book went back on the shelf and gathered some dust.

Oggi cambio argomento e Vi parlo del kumihimo.
Anche per questo ci sono arrivata per gradi. Avevo fatto arrivare da Amazon il libro Kumihimo: Japanese Silk Braiding Techniques ed il racconto che faceva l’autrice di queste trecce era affascinante, però lei l’aveva visto fare in Giappone ed era riuscita a trovare un telaio (chiamato Marudai) presso il mercato delle pulci a Londra. Appena vidi la foto del telaio dissi, “e dove lo trovo, non sono un falegname” ed il libro andò insieme agl’altri sullo scaffale.

After a few years I read a review on a magazine regarding kumihimo but done with a mobidai. This seemed more reasonable. I found it on e-bay and ordered it. I dusted off my book and tried again.
I was humiliated, I was depressed, I was MAD, I was stupid, I couldn't understand how it was done.
The book returned to gather more dust and the mobidai took up its adobe in my wardrobe .
Dopo qualche anno, sfogliando una rivista, vidi la pubblicità sempre del kumihimo però fatto con un dischetto in schiuma chiamato Mobidai. Sono andata su E-bay e ho trovato il dischetto, il quale veniva fornito con dei fili colorati, poiché non costava molto l’ho fatto arrivare. Sono andata a riprendermi il mio libro, ho preso il dischetto con i suoi fili colorati e dopo un po’, il libro è tornato sullo scaffale ed il dischetto nel mio armadio. Era troppo complicato, non riuscivo a capire come andava fatto.

Some more time passed and while I was reading a blog I saw a link to kumihimo, I went there, a video on Youtube opened, I watched and said, no way can it be so simple.
E’ passato ancora un po’ di tempo e su di un blog che trattava varie tecniche di lavoro trovai il link ad un video su Youtube dove c’era una dimostrazione di kumihimo. L’ho visto e ho detto, “Non può essere così facile.

If you've never tried it, get some cardboard and cut yourself a disk with a diameter of about 6" and make a 1" hole in the center. Make 11 slits along the outer border of the disk.
It should look like this :
Se avete voglia e volete provare, prendeteVi un pezzo di cartone un po’ rigido e ritagliate un disco con un diametro di circa 14-15 cm. Fate un buco di circa 1,5 cm nel mezzo e fate 11 tacche nel bordo esterno del disco a distanza regolare.
Dovrebbe assomigliare a questo :



Now try first with some wool in 2 different colors and cut 5 strands about a yard long, 2 of one color and 3 of the other. Fold them in half and make a knot :
Adesso prendete della lana un po’ grossa di 2 colori diversi e tagliate dei fili lunghi 90 cm circa, 2 di un colore e 3 dell’altro. Piegateli a meta e fate un nodo così :



Pass the knot through the hole and the wool through the 10 of the slits, leaving one free. Like this :
Infilate il nodo attraverso il buco e fate passare i fili attraverso 10 delle tacche lasciando una libera. Dovrebbe essere così :



Now go here and you'll see how easy it is :

Continue like this until you used up all of the wool. At the end it should be like this.
Continuate così fino alla fine spostando sempre indietro il terzo filo. Alla fine sarà così.
